Assistant Director of Programs & Exhibitions

National Liberty Museum
Philadelphia, PA

About Us

The National Liberty Museum explores and celebrates the story of liberty in America. Through exhibitions and public programs, we challenge audiences to think critically, engage in civil discourse, and reflect on the responsibilities that come with freedom.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Programs & Exhibitions is an operational leader responsible for delivering the Museum’s exhibitions and public programs on time, on budget, and at a high level of quality. Reporting to the Senior Director of Content & Interpretation, this role turns interpretive goals and strategic priorities into finished, visitor-facing experiences.

This position is execution-focused, combining strong project management with creative problem-solving to ensure exhibitions and programs are impactful, accessible, and mission-aligned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Exhibitions

  • Lead the planning and delivery of multiple temporary exhibitions annually, from concept through installation and evaluation.
  • Ensure exhibitions are visitor-centered, content-driven, and aligned with the Museum’s interpretive framework and mission.
  • Manage exhibition schedules, budgets, contracts, and cross-departmental coordination.
  • Translate complex ideas about liberty and civil discourse into engaging public experiences.
  • Evaluate exhibitions using data and visitor feedback to improve future work.

Programs

  • Deliver a strong portfolio of public programs—tours, talks, panels, workshops, and special events—that extend the impact of exhibitions.
  • Design programs that encourage dialogue, participation, and critical thinking.
  • Build and manage relationships with scholars, artists, and community partners.
  • Oversee program logistics, budgets, and evaluation to ensure consistent quality.

Digital and National Reach

  • Support digital, hybrid, and online exhibitions and programs that expand the Museum’s national presence.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Supervise program managers and staff, setting clear expectations and ensuring accountability.
  • Coordinate closely with Marketing, Development, Education, Operations, and Visitor Experience to deliver projects smoothly.
  • Support fundraising by managing grant- and donor-funded deliverables and timelines.
  • Serve as a key operational partner to the Senior Director of Content & Interpretation.

Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience translating complex ideas into accessible public content.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering exhibitions and/or public programs in museums or cultural institutions.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects, budgets, and timelines.
  • Commitment to the Museum’s mission and comfort working with challenging or nuanced topics.
