How You Will Contribute
Gallery Teachers are energetic educators who will teach for the duration of school year programming. Gallery Teachers teach children 3-10 years old and their families on gallery tours, with occasional opportunities to research and prepare lesson plans in consultation with the Coordinator of Family Programs. When not teaching, Gallery Teachers will help facilitate artmaking in the Art Kids Studio. This position requires a weekly weekend shift and availability on Family Festival Sundays.
Gallery Teachers will lead tours that emphasize participatory and hands-on experiences that make meaningful connections to the PMA collection and temporary exhibitions, Teachers will research artists and artworks to create in-gallery experience that centers creativity, inquiry, and play. Teachers will create inclusive tours that incorporate DEIA best practices in their lesson planning and teaching. As part of the Family Programs team, they will participate in ongoing professional development in their teaching practice.
Specifically, you will:
- Teach gallery tours designed for children with an emphasis on participatory experiences that make connections to the PMA collection and temporary exhibitions
- Attend and actively participate in scheduled trainings
- Thoroughly prepare lesson plans and additional materials in advance of tours following submission guidelines
- Attend monthly team meetings
- Collaborate in designing curricula
- Prepare teaching materials
- Support administrative responsibilities associated with tours
- Set up learning environments
- Welcome visitors to public programs, including children and their grownups, and encourage participation
- Introduce and facilitate art making activities, designed by Family Programs staff
- Maintain programming space—keep it tidy, organized, and follow the systems and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your background and experience include:
- Experience teaching (teaching in a museum setting desired, but not required)
- Familiarity with art making materials
- Experience working with children in formal or informal settings
- Excellent judgment and customer services skills (we welcome a background in retail, hospitality, and dining)
- Ability to work in a team environment
Position and Compensation Details
- The HOURLY RATE for this position is $25.31/hr.
- This position is PART-TIME, NON-EXEMPT, and 10-15 hours per week.
- This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.
- This position reports to the Manager of Family Programs.
- This position is a term position, ending August 2027.
- Physical requirements:
- Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
- Include job-specific physical requirements as needed
- Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
- PA Child Abuse Clearance and FBI Fingerprinting required.
- Upholds the professional standards of the field, always acts in a manner that is consistent with the best interests of the museum, and protects and enhances its reputation and standing within the community of museums.
- Adheres to the museum’s code of ethics and Employee Handbook and avoids any real or perceived conflicts of interest.
- Shows respect for co-workers and visitors and an understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of the museum’s staff, volunteers, and audiences.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Adheres to all museum protocols, procedures, rules, and policies.
