POSITION SUMMARY
The On-Road Safety Supervisor is a field-based supervisory position within the Safety & Compliance Department, responsible for monitoring and evaluating paratransit drivers’ performance in real-world operating conditions. This role is critical to upholding the organization’s commitment to passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and service excellence. The On-Road Safety Supervisor conducts unannounced field observations, leads accident and incident investigations, and delivers immediate performance coaching to drivers across the service area.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Observation & Performance Monitoring
- Conduct unannounced on-road observations of paratransit drivers to evaluate safe driving practices, passenger assistance techniques, and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Assess driver compliance with ADA regulations, vehicle securement protocols, and service standards during active revenue service.
- Document field observation findings using standardized evaluation forms and submitting timely written reports to the Safety Manager.
- Monitor driver behavior patterns and identify systemic performance deficiencies across the fleet.
- Respond promptly to accidents, incidents, and passenger complaints in the field, serving as the on-scene supervisory representative.
- Conduct thorough investigations, including gathering driver and witness statements, photographing scenes, reviewing onboard vehicle data and camera footage, and coordinating with law enforcement as required.
- Prepare detailed, objective investigation reports with findings, contributing factors, and recommended corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate records of all incidents, complaints, and investigations in the safety management system.
- Collaborate with the Safety Manager and HR Department on disciplinary follow-up and corrective action plans.
- Provide immediate, constructive coaching and corrective feedback to drivers following field observations or incidents.
- Identify recurring trends in safety performance data and recommend targeted corrective actions, refresher training, or policy updates.
- Assist the Training Department with behind-the-wheel evaluations and remedial training sessions as needed.
- Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability throughout the driver’s workforce.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including ADA, DOT, and SEPTA requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required or relevant coursework in transportation, safety, or a related field preferred
- Minimum 3 years of experience in paratransit, fixed-route transit, or transportation operations
- Prior supervisory, field training, or safety investigation experience strongly preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (MVR will be reviewed)
- Current DOT medical examiner’s certificate preferred
- Defensive driving or safety certification (e.g., Smith System, PTSI) a plus Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
- In-depth knowledge of ADA paratransit regulations, safe driving standards, and passenger assistance techniques
- Familiarity with DOT, and applicable federal and state safety regulations
- Strong investigative skills with the ability to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and produce objective written reports
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills; ability to deliver constructive feedback professionally
- High level of integrity, objectivity, and sound judgment in the field
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with safety management or fleet tracking systems preferred
- Ability to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, or early mornings as operational needs require
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This is a field-based position; most of the work is performed in a agency vehicle while conducting on-road observations across the service area.
- Exposure to varying outdoor weather conditions, traffic environments, and occasional accident scenes is expected.
- Must be able to respond to incidents across the service territory, including during non-standard hours.
- Ability to assist with vehicle inspections and mobility device handling, including lifting up to 50 lbs., is required.
