Purpose:

The Pharmacy Technician supports the specialty pharmacy team in the accurate and timely fulfillment of complex medication orders for patients managing rare or ultra-rare diseases. This role works closely with pharmacists to prepare, package, and ship prescriptions while ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards, manufacturer requirements, and cold chain handling protocols. In addition, the technician assists with supply chain and inventory management to maintain appropriate stock levels of temperature-sensitive and high-value specialty medications. The pharmacy technician reports to the pharmacy manager.

  • Communicate and collaborate with operational teams to dispense and deliver medications aligned with patient needs and organizational strategies.
  • Accurately prepare and package prescription medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Generate and apply prescription labels, auxiliary labels, and required documentation.
  • Assist pharmacists with ensuring dispensing aligns with clinical and manufacturer program guidelines.
  • Handle high-touch therapies that require complex dosing, shipping, or handling protocols.
  • Support daily, weekly, and monthly inventory control of specialty medications, ancillary supplies, and packaging materials.
  • Perform cold chain management tasks including:
    • Maintaining correct storage temperatures for refrigerated and frozen items.
    • Monitoring and documenting temperature logs.
    • Preparing and packing temperature-controlled shipments using validated containers.
  • Assist in conducting regular inventory reconciliations to identify variances, expired stock, or short-dated products.
  • Collaborate with procurement and warehouse staff to ensure product availability aligns with dispensing demand.
  • Support implementation of process improvements that enhance order accuracy, patient safety, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in internal audits, quality checks, and accreditation activities (e.g., URAC, ACHC).
  • Ensure proper documentation of all dispensing and inventory activities in the pharmacy management system.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Active state pharmacy technician registration (or registration completion prior to June 2026)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working as a pharmacy technician in a retail, hospital, or specialty pharmacy environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of prescription processing, medication handling, and inventory control.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to accurately prepare and package medications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; ability to collaborate closely with pharmacists and operations staff.
  • Basic computer literacy and familiarity with pharmacy management software systems.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health career Association (NHA).
  • Prior experience working with rare disease, biologic, or specialty medications, including temperature-sensitive products.
  • Experience with cold chain management, temperature monitoring, and shipment preparation.
  • Familiarity with specialty pharmacy workflows, accreditation standards (URAC, ACHC), and data documentation requirements.
  • Experience supporting inventory management systems or pharmacy automation tools.

Work Environment
Work Environment This position operates in a well-lit pharmacy environment. The role routinely uses pharmaceutical equipment and safety supplies. This position operates fully on-site, with an expectation of being onsite Monday through Friday, with 8-hour shifts occurring between 8am-8pm. Employees must be within commuting distance of our headquarters, located at 310 Merchant Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15205. Vanscoy Rare Pharmacy will provide all necessary equipment required to ensure a functional and efficient workspace.
