Duties
Essential Job Functions:- Searches and identifies evidence at crime scenes.
- Performs evidence documentation at crime scenes to include photography, note taking, sketching and collection of measurements.
- Performs collection and preservation of evidence at crimes scenes.
- Performs evidence processing, presumptive testing and reconstructive type activities at crime scenes and within the laboratory.
- Maintains chain of custody of evidence.
- Operates, maintains and troubleshoots crime scene equipment and laboratory instrumentation to include cameras, alternate light sources, imaging systems, measuring devices.
- Prepares and processes samples via collection and screening techniques.
- Prepares and processes samples within the Friction Ridge Processing section of the laboratory.
- Prepares and processes samples for Rapid DNA analysis.
- Performs quality control and quality assurance, method development and validation for crime scene/laboratory techniques and instrumentation.
- Orders and maintains inventory of crime scene reagents and other laboratory supplies.
- Serves as a technical consultant to the laboratory director, District Attorney staff, and the law enforcement community of Cumberland County in the area of Crime Scene.
- Summarizes findings, compiles data, and prepares laboratory reports.
- Prepares visual/demonstrative exhibits for display and testimony in court.
- Testifies to findings and methods used in court; Renders opinions as needed when supported by collected evidence/data.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Assists laboratory director with other duties and projects as needed.
- Must have a valid PA driver’s license.
- Must be available/on call for crime scenes and rush laboratory analyses as needed.
Minimum Requirements to Perform the Work:
Education:- The crime scene analyst will have at a minimum, a 2 year degree in medical, chemistry, biology, or related field.
- Candidates with additional education and/or experience may be given preference.
- The crime scene analyst will participate in continuing education through professional conferences and trainings.
- Employee performance is monitored by technical and administrative review of casework, annual proficiency testing, courtroom testimony review, annual performance reviews, and effective supervision.
- Experience working in a forensic, medical, or analytical laboratory or processing crime scenes is preferred.
