Library Introduction

The Haverford Township Free Library (HTFL) is located in Haverford Township, the fifth-largest township in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Our friendly and professional staff is dedicated to providing stellar customer service and high-quality informational resources to people of all ages.

HTFL is one of the largest of the 28 Delaware County Libraries (DCL) and is a vital, active leader within the library community.

Position Definition

The Teen Services Librarian develops, implements, and evaluates library services and programming for teens and tweens (ages 12–19) in a fast-paced, high-volume public library. This position is responsible for decision-making related to teen and tween services, including organizing daily in-house and outreach programs; providing reference services; managing and developing collections; and guiding youth in the use of digital media and library resources.

The Teen Services Librarian also supports the Youth Services Department by assisting with routine library operations, including coverage at the circulation/youth services desks, checking materials in and out, creating library cards, and assuming limited supervisory responsibilities in the absence of a senior manager. This is a full-time position that requires schedule flexibility, including evenings and weekends. The Teen Services Librarian ensures the highest level of service is provided to all patrons.

Qualifications

● Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or a minimum of three years of professional experience working with teens or tweens

● Knowledge of the developmental, recreational, and educational needs of teens and tweens

● Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, current trends in library services for and with young adults

● Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, standard library procedures, current information technologies, and internet and database search tools

● Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, best practices in teen and tween services, including guidelines and standards published by ALA, YALSA, and other recognized organizations

● Knowledge of best practices in program assessment and teen/tween engagement

● Strong commitment to teamwork and collaboration

● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, staff, management, and community partners

● Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet program deadlines

● Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in youth programming

● Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends

Program Development

● Involves teens and tweens in the planning and implementation of services designed for their age group

● Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs, activities, and services—both in the library and in the community—that meet the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of local teens and tweens

● Participates in short- and long-term planning for the Teen Services Department

● Coordinates daily activities of staff and volunteers assigned to teen services

● Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing, and evaluating overall teen and tween services

● Educates and assists teens, tweens, and caregivers in selecting and using library materials and technology, as well as developing research and digital literacy skills

Partnerships and Outreach

● Ability to think creatively and collaborate with Youth Services Manager, Library Director, and other department managers.

● Develops and maintains effective relationships with schools, community groups, agencies and nonprofits that target youth in order to plan and deliver programs and services that meet local teens and tweens needs and interests.

● Participates in community activities and meetings related to position, as needed

Customer Engagement

● Creates a welcoming, creative, vibrant and dynamic environment that attracts and invites teens and tweens to use the library.

● Provides prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable assistance to all patrons regarding library materials, equipment, and services

● Adheres to library policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for staff and the public

● Responds appropriately in building emergencies.

● Positively reflects and represents HTFL’s mission, vision, and values to staff and the public

Collection and Acquisition

● Ensures the library’s collections include relevant print and digital resources that reflect the interests and needs of the teen and tween community

● Curates content, including digital resources and special collections, for and with teen and tween patrons, based on their needs and interests.

● Promotes collection use through book talks, discussion groups, and other engagement strategies

● Develops, maintains, and weeds young adult collections on a regular basis

● Coordinates with technical services staff on processing and cataloging of young adult materials

● Administers designated portions of the Youth Services Department budget, as assigned

Additional Duties

● Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Youth Services and other department staff

● Assists with creating, teaching, training, and supervising staff and volunteers, as assigned

● Provides assistance in the Children’s Room and other departments as needed

● Accepts supervision and direction from the Youth Services Manager, senior managers, and the Library Director

● Reports work accomplishments to the Youth Services Manager and Library Director

● Stays informed about trends in teen, tween, and young adult library services and shares relevant information with staff

● Attends continuing education workshops, conferences, webinars, and library staff and departmental meetings

● Demonstrates the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment

● Performs other related duties as assigned

Salary/Benefits

The salary range for this full-time position is $40,000–$45,000, depending on qualifications and experience. HTFL offers an excellent benefits package that includes health, prescription, dental, and vision insurance, as well as retirement benefits.
