Underground technician

American Rooter is hiring an Underground Leak Detection Technician based at our Freeland location. The primary duty is locating and marking underground leaks on exterior residential water service lines so our excavation crews can make fast, accurate repairs. You’ll also handle internal plumbing repairs as assigned, communicate options to homeowners, and document your work clearly in our mobile app.

Key Responsibilities

• Locate and mark underground leaks on exterior water service lines using acoustic listening equipment, ground microphones, correlators, meter isolation, pressure testing, and line locating.
• Create clear mark-outs, note depth/landmarks and identify nearby underground utilities to brief the excavation crew on potential risks.
• Perform internal plumbing repairs as assigned (shutoffs, PRVs, valves, water heaters, etc.).
• Upsell and close homeowner-paid repair options that fall outside partnership coverage—professionally and ethically.
• Document jobs in real time (photos/video, measurements, utility notes) in the mobile app so crews can mobilize without re-diagnosis.
• Meet strict partner SLA metrics (response times, quality, surveys, documentation).
• Follow OSHA safety practices, PA One Call, and local permitting/inspection requirements.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of plumbing/service plumbing experience (required).
• Experience repairing/replacing water service lines (required).
• Underground leak detection experience is a plus—we will train motivated candidates with strong fundamentals.
• Strong customer communication and sales skills to explain findings and present options.
• Comfortable using mobile job apps for notes and media uploads.
• Detail-oriented, safety-first, and able to work independently in the field.
• Valid driver’s license with insurable record; ability to meet partner screening requirements.
• Ability to lift/pull 75+ lbs, kneel/crouch, work outdoors in all weather, and operate safely around utilities and excavations (PPE provided).
