Position Summary

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Director of Drafting & Design to lead full-scope drafting and design operations. This role oversees a 10+ person team and manages all aspects of architectural production, permitting, and design coordination.

This is a hands-on leadership position focused on delivering high-quality, production-ready plans on time and with consistency across multiple markets. The ideal candidate has a strong background in residential drafting, excels in process management, and brings a collaborative, team-first leadership style.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of drafting and design professionals, including

• Oversee three key functional areas:

  • Production – Permit sets and project start documentation

  • Design Group – Standard plan development and updates

  • MEP Group – Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing integration

• Ensure drafting and design work meets deadlines, quality standards, and code compliance

• Maintain and improve workflow processes to support project timelines and operational efficiency

• Coordinate closely with cross-functional teams including construction, estimating, and purchasing

• Serve as a point of escalation for technical or process-related drafting issues

• Leverage ArchiCAD to guide the team’s production and modeling standards

• Provide mentorship, performance management, and career development for the team

Candidate Requirements

Experience & Skills:

• 8+ years of experience in residential drafting and design

• Proven team leadership experience; ideally has managed a mid-sized or larger drafting team

• Strong technical understanding of architectural drafting, permitting, and production workflows

• Proficient in ArchiCAD (or comparable architectural software)

• Familiarity with standardized plan sets and high-volume production homebuilding

• Ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining quality and team cohesion

• Experience with MEP coordination and structural integration preferred

Education:

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Drafting, Construction Management, or related field preferred

• Professional certifications in drafting or architectural design a plus

Preferred Backgrounds

Ideal candidates will come from one of the following professional paths:

1. Residential Homebuilder – A current Drafting Manager or Design Manager overseeing technical design, plan production, and team management

2. Architectural or Engineering Firm – A manager leading drafting or technical design teams, with transferable skills in residential development and team oversight
