Clarke Mainstream Services assists anyone involved in mainstreaming students with hearing loss in regular classrooms. Mainstream Itinerant Teachers of the Deaf provide direct and consultative services to students in preschool through high school. Services are provided as stipulated in a student’s IEP and can include consultation with professionals, direct service to students, support to families, program observations and training. Teachers must demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to communicate, the challenges encountered by students with hearing loss in regular school.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Guide schools in the development of an effective support system for students with hearing loss. This includes knowledge of support services, acoustical and audiological supports, speech and language instruction, counseling, and instructional media.
- Provide direct service to students, preschool through high school, as indicated in their IEP. These services can be provided as push-in to the classroom or individual pull-out sessions.
- Collaborate with teachers as they work to adapt their teaching style to students with hearing loss. Recommend needed modifications and accommodations.
- Work in collaboration with reading specialists, SLPs, special education staff and others helping them understand the impact of hearing loss on the student as it applies to their work.
- In-service general education staff regarding educating students with hearing loss.
- In-service hearing peers regarding the experience of hearing loss and effective communication practices.
- Monitor the development of language. Provide one-to-one instruction as needed to ensure language is developing as expected.
- Promote the development of self-advocacy skills and help students develop an understanding of how their hearing loss impacts them.
- Facilitate parent involvement and support of family goals in the education of their child.
- Monitor the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems and other assistive devices.
- Participate in I.E.P. Meetings and/or other meetings in those schools assisting in the development of Individual Education Programs.
- Plan and present group orientation workshops and ongoing in-service training for the staff.
Other Duties:
- Write quarterly reports to the contracted school systems describing the services provided.
- Assist with the placement of Clarke Schools’ students and the follow-up of those students who are already in mainstream schools.
Physical demands:
- Ability to drive between multiple schools in one day.
Education, licenses, certifications, skills and experience:
- Master’s degree in Deaf Education with an emphasis on listening and spoken language.
- Teaching experience with students who are deaf or hard of hearing and use listening and spoken language.
- Access to a vehicle and a valid U.S. Driver’s license and a clean driving record. Clarke will reimburse costs of work-related travel monthly upon submission of documentation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for students who are deaf and hard of hearing and support services and how they are managed.
- Able to communicate well with a diverse group of people, both hearing and those with hearing loss with diplomacy.
- Able to function effectively as a team member and work collaboratively with others to share information and ideas.
- Able to be flexible in dealing with families and professionals and respond to changing needs of students.
- Able to participate as a professional in IEP meetings and able to assist in writing goals.
- Able to write reports and correspondence including quarterly reports, newsletter articles, handouts and contracts.
- Able to use technology in daily work including skills to use e-mail, the internet, word processing and power point.
- Knowledge of amplification, adaptive equipment and applicable technology.
