Chair and Surgeon in Chief, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Deadline: Jul 23, 2027 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Department of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seek candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. The holder of this position will serve as Chair of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Expertise is required in academic pediatric general surgery or a related pediatric surgical specialty. Applicants must have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree. They will also be board certified in general pediatric surgery, any related pediatric surgical discipline, or the equivalent, and must be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The faculty appointment will be in the academic department in the Perelman School of Medicine that is consistent with the clinical and scientific expertise of the successful candidate. Rank will be commensurate with experience. The Chair leads one of the most complex pediatric surgical departments in the country with responsibility for over 140 faculty across all surgical subspecialties. The Chair plays a critical leadership role and will work closely with hospital leadership to maintain and enhance excellence in clinical care, education, and research. The Chair will set an innovative course for the department, ensuring long-term financial viability while maintaining clinical excellence, advancing scholarship, and generating research breakthroughs. Foremost, the Chair will recruit, retain, and develop faculty and divisional leadership. The Chair will play a pivotal role in the development and implementation of a range of geographic and programmatic expansions consistent with the overall mission of CHOP. The Chair collaborates closely with the Chairs of the Department of Surgery and other surgical academic departments of the Perelman School of Medicine for academic matters, including faculty appointments and promotion. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to navigate through complexity and work effectively with hospital leadership to implement ambitious clinical and research agendas. They must also demonstrate a collaborative personal style that facilitates communication, transparency, humility, and a balanced point of view. Teaching responsibilities may include participating in clinical education and mentoring residents, fellows, advanced practice nurses, and research trainees in applicant's surgical subspecialty. Clinical responsibilities may include providing direct patient care as a practicing pediatric or pediatric specialty surgeon. Research or scholarship responsibilities may include scientific contributions to the candidate's sub-specialty field.
