About Mon Valley Initiative:Mon Valley Initiative (MVI) , founded in 1988 , works to improve the lives of people in the Mon Valley area by helping to rebuild community infrastructure and connecting employers to people seeking new jobs and careers. We do this by delivering quality services to the people of the Mon Valley, including housing counseling , real estate and community development and workforce development and financial coaching . We also partner with other local advisory groups and community development corporations that together engage more than 100 local volunteers to think about, and find solutions to, our common and connected problems. The Communications and External Relations Coordinator will play a key role in advancing our organization’s mission by supporting the development and implementation of a sustainable communications and marketing strategy. This position works closely with leadership and the Community Development team to strengthen relationships with government officials, community partners, and key stakeholders. Based in MVI’s “Mid-Mon” service area (Charleroi office), this role helps ensure the organization is recognized as a trusted and essential provider of high-quality human services and real estate development initiatives that address critical community needs. Essential Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, stakeholders, community leaders, volunteers, and media outlets.
- Act as a conduit in delivering communication/information between various organizations and the public as appropriate.
- Maintain high community visibility by attending community events and meetings.
- Support the coordination of community engagement on various public planning initiatives related to MVI’s projects and programs as assigned.
- Plan and execute events of various sizes.
- Generate and articulate key messages regarding important issues affecting Mon Valley communities and relating MVI’s excellent work in addressing such issues.
- Lead the generation of written content that engages MVI’s constituencies and leads to measurable action, including fundraising.
- Collaborate on the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, annual report, fundraising platforms, newsletters, brochures, social media and MVI’s website.
- Track and measure the level of engagement with communications mediums over time using social media analytic platforms, Google Ads, and more.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant communications, marketing, or external relations experience required.
- Exceptional written, editing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex or technical content into clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Experience with basic graphic design and development of visual communications materials.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Salesforce or a similar CRM/contact management system.
- Experience managing and analyzing content across social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, and LinkedIn.
- Experience with Squarespace and Google Ads preferred.
- Experience in community development and/or human services strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with the Mon Valley region, particularly Mid-Mon communities in Washington and Westmoreland counties, preferred.
- Position is located in Charleroi office with one day per week in Homestead office.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends.
- Full-time access to a vehicle.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Appropriate car insurance.
- Position includes frequent standing, walking, verbal communications, including t telephone contact, and travel between facilities.

The salary range for this role is $50,000-$70,000, dependent on relevant experience.
