Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) Asbestos Analyst

Schedule: M-F 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Position Summary

We are seeking a qualified Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) Asbestos Analyst to perform asbestos identification and analysis of bulk building materials in accordance with EPA, AHERA, and NIOSH regulations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, and experienced in laboratory asbestos analysis.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform asbestos analysis of bulk samples using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)
• Identify asbestos type(s) and estimate percentage content in building materials
• Follow EPA 600/R-93/116, AHERA, and laboratory SOPs
• Maintain accurate analytical records, worksheets, and chain-of-custody documentation
• Ensure quality control procedures are followed, including calibration and QA/QC checks
• Maintain laboratory cleanliness, safety, and compliance standards
• Communicate results clearly and promptly to laboratory management
• Assist with proficiency testing, audits, and corrective actions as needed

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Successful completion of an EPA/AHERA-approved PLM analyst course
• Demonstrated proficiency in asbestos identification via PLM
• Knowledge of EPA, AHERA, OSHA, and NIOSH asbestos regulations
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
• Ability to handle a high volume of samples while maintaining accuracy

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in an accredited asbestos laboratory
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geology
• Familiarity with NVLAP or AIHA-LAP accredited lab environments
• Participation in PLM proficiency testing programs

Physical & Safety Requirements

• Ability to work with microscopes for extended periods
• Ability to handle and prepare asbestos-containing materials using proper PPE
• Compliance with all laboratory safety and exposure control procedures
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test
