Allegheny Reproductive Health Center (ARHC) has provided compassionate reproductive healthcare for 50 years. This includes abortion services, gender-affirming care, and gynecological care. We serve diverse patients with respect and confidentiality.
General Summary:
This position is an ideal position for a flexible, team-oriented individual who is interested in and motivated to learn to perform ultrasound for abortion clients and also desires to learn and participate in other aspects of clinical care. Ultrasound training will be completed on-site. Previous medical experience is preferred. Ultrasound certification is not required.
Under supervision, the Ultrasound Assistant performs ultrasounds for all patients requiring ultrasound evaluation. Ultrasounds will be done primarily to determine gestational age and viability of pregnancies prior to abortion procedures as well as other clinical indicated evaluations. The position is also for an Operating Room Flex role, in which the employee will perform tasks in the procedural area of the clinic, as directed by a supervisor. Operating Room Flex tasks will be trained on-the-job; this may include, but is not limited to, assisting providers during procedures, completing laboratory testing, caring for patients in the recovery room, answering phones, taking messages and making follow-up calls.
Must comply with ARHC policies and protocols, maintain BLS certification (which can be obtained after hire, if needed), and keep current on clinic changes and updates.
Core Responsibilities:
- Prepares and stocks the ultrasound room daily.
- Performs pre-abortion ultrasounds to determine pregnancy gestational age, viability, and other relevant clinical findings.
- Performs other ultrasounds as clinically indicated and requested by the provider.
- Documents ultrasound findings in the electronic medical record.
- Cleans and sanitizes the procedure room and equipment between patients.
- Reports any patient issues to the appropriate staff member or supervisor.
- Performs ultrasound guidance during procedures as clinically indicated.
- Offers emotional support to patients when necessary and explanation of ultrasounds, if requested by patients.
- Cleans, stocks, and breaks down the ultrasound room at the end of the day.
- Provides assistance in the operating room area after receiving adequate training; this may include, but is not limited to: running labs, assisting with procedures, cleaning rooms, monitoring patients in the recovery room, answering phone calls, taking messages, and making follow-up calls.
Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Skills/Qualifications:
- Willingness to complete on-the-job training to perform ultrasounds and operating room tasks.
- Previous medical experience preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
- Strong problem-solving and de-escalation skills.
- Current CPR certification or willingness to earn CPR certification.
- Must maintain a calm and personable demeanor. Must be courteous, non-judgmental, but directive and firm toward patients.
- Ability to maintain calm, commanding demeanor in times of medical emergency or other difficult situations.
- Ability to work with and interact with individuals from all socio-economic, ethnic, sexually oriented, and religious backgrounds.
- Ability to be self-motivated, as well as take instruction and guidance from others.
- Ability to work under conditions of stress with minimal supervision and direction.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality in reproductive healthcare
- Compassion for people seeking all aspects of reproductive care. Including but not limited to: abortion, gender affirming care, gynecological care etc.
Bonus Skills/Qualifications:
- Familiarity with Athena or similar EMR systems
- Training or work experience in abortion care, reproductive health.
Working Conditions:
Employees will interact with a variety of people of various ages, experience and points of reference. Patients may be experiencing emotional stress which may result in ambivalent behavior. Employees may also expect to encounter individuals who are strongly anti-abortion and may verbally harass or possibly threaten employees and/or patients. Possible exposure to contaminated specimens and other conditions associated with a health center environment.
Schedule:
This position requires the employee to work every Saturday. Typical shift days are Tuesday, Thursdays, Friday, and Saturdays.
