POSITION SUMMARY
The Driver Trainer is a collateral duty position within the Operations Department, responsible for delivering comprehensive, hands-on training to new and existing paratransit drivers. This role plays a critical part in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services for passengers who depend on paratransit to meet their daily needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Training Delivery
- Conduct behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction for new driver trainees in accordance with established training curricula.
- Provide instruction in defensive driving techniques, vehicle pre-trip inspection procedures, and safe vehicle operation.
- Train drivers on Passenger Assistance Techniques (PAT) and sensitivity awareness, ensuring respectful and safe interactions with passengers of varying abilities.
- Teach proper use of mobility aid securement equipment, including wheelchair tie-downs and occupant restraint systems.
Operations & Compliance
- Instruct trainees on manifest completion, scheduling systems, and route management protocols.
- Provide training on radio operations, communication procedures, and dispatcher protocols.
- Ensure all training activities comply with Community Transit, ADA, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Document training progress, skills assessments, and trainee evaluations in accordance with departmental recordkeeping requirements.
- Report on trainee performance concerns to the Training Supervisor (Risk manager) and or HR Manager in a timely manner.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education & Licensing
- Valid, unrestricted commercial or appropriate class driver’s license
- Current medical examiner’s certificate (DOT physical), if applicable
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of paratransit or fixed-route transit driving experience
- Clean driving record with no preventable accidents in the past 3 years
- Prior training, coaching, or supervisory experience preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- In-depth familiarity with Delaware County and surrounding service areas
- Proficiency in map reading and GPS navigation systems
- Strong passenger assistance and ADA sensitivity skills
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and performance coaching
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and compliance
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work is performed in both indoor classroom and outdoor/vehicle environments; exposure to varying weather conditions is expected.
- Must be able to assist passengers, including lifting and securing mobility devices up to 50 lbs.
- Schedule is flexible and determined in conjunction with regular driving duties; training assignments may vary.
