Position Summary

Tyler School of Art and Architecture's Art History Department invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2026. The department seeks a candidate whose research is centered on either the ancient Greek or Roman world with a specialty in archaeology and/or emerging technologies and ethical issues related to collections. The department is especially interested in cross-cultural encounters and exchanges, examining the ways in which art is produced and circulates through networks of trade and immigration, and how its discourse is formed by the dynamics of race, colonialism, post-colonialism, and globalization. The ability to make links to Temple University's Rome campus is desirable.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to global approaches to the field of art history and have an active research profile. The applicant's research and teaching would complement current departmental expertise and contribute to the Department's efforts to diversify the curriculum, on the undergraduate and graduate level and contribute to our mission of academic excellence, innovative research, and inclusive education.

Responsibilities

We seek a scholar who would teach a range of undergraduate courses, from introductory to upper-level, and graduate courses that would appeal to the variety of disciplines housed within Tyler School of Art. The applicant is expected to maintain an active role in the MA and PhD programs within the Department, including mentoring and advising students from different backgrounds. The standard teaching load is 2/2. The applicant should show evidence of scholarly research, including publication in peer-reviewed venues. Evidence of external funding to support research activities is highly desirable. The applicant is expected to contribute to departmental, college, and university service.

Qualifications

PhD in art history or a related field by the time of hire. Proven capacity for research potential, engaged and excellent teaching and a commitment to creating inclusive and accessible spaces for all students.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

About The Department

The Art History Department consists of ten full-time faculty, with specialties ranging from Iron Age Anatolia to Contemporary, western Asia to the Americas, who focus on inclusive and global perspectives in the study of the history of art. We offer a bachelor's and master's and PhD degrees. As an integral part of the BFA and MFA programs within the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, faculty members also maintain strong ties with the College of Liberal Arts and the Klein College of Media and Communication along with arts and cultural institutions within the Philadelphia region.
