Summary/ Objective:

The Outside Sales Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of a sales strategy for the South Central Industrial and OEM sales team that aligns and contributes to the annual corporate performance goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop sales plans with the sales team to meet assigned regional market goals

  • Understand market size, potential and share

  • Develop assigned business plans with suppliers that are identified as strategic to the success on the markets and SYD

  • Collaborating with SYD Specialty Teams on sales plans

  • Monitor KPIs for annual sales and gross margin growth, new account development, operating knowledge of customers, and strategy development

  • Ability to evaluate the current market to determine customer needs and sales potential in addition to appropriate pricing

  • When appropriate, hire additional sales staff to support growth and cover respective territory

  • Work to ensure that the sales team is fully proficient and meets the essential functions of role requirements, while continually addressing all performance matters throughout the year.

  • Conduct monthly and annual review for each outside sales representative utilizing the Outside Sales Dashboard

  • Develop training plans and/or determine appropriate internal/external training for each team member while continually providing guidance and coaching through potential problems/opportunities

  • Evaluate industry and business trends for potential impact on the assigned markets

  • Identify key opportunities and potential threats for the assigned markets

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key customers and suppliers so that the assigned markets are properly positioned within the marketplace

  • Provide guidance and support in the retention of profitable business

  • Maintain constructive relationships with customers to preserve business opportunities

  • Joint travels with each outside sales representative on a regular basis and provides pre-call/post-call coaching on their performance

  • Coordinate with Director of Marketing for specific territory marketing requirements, promotions and new-product launches

Competencies:

  • Proficient with or possess the ability to learn the Eclipse ERP system, Phocas Business Intelligence and CRM tools

  • Thorough understanding of and/or the ability to learn the SYD Pricing System

  • Strong analytical and computer skills (Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint)

  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills

Supervisory Responsibility:

This role is a supervisory role.

The following positions report to the Outside Sales Manager:

  • South Central PA Industrial and OEM Outside Sales Representatives

Work Environment: This job operates in a clerical, office setting and may frequently work in any of our remote branch locations. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, postage meters and fax machines.

Mental Demands:

Must be able to understand and give direction, gather information, use logic to analyze information and problem-solve. Able to adapt well in a fast-paced environment and possess the ability to manage multiple opportunities and tasks simultaneously. Must be self-aware and be empathetic towards peers and subordinates.

Physical Demands:

This is largely a sedentary role; however, frequent travel to SYD branches, customer/vendor locations is required. The job requires frequent sitting, with periods of moderate standing, walking, and driving.

Travel:

Travel is required 15%-20% of the time. The Outside Sales Manager must possess a valid Driver’s License and be able to present a clean driving history.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred

  • Minimum of five (5) years of wholesale distribution industry experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years sales experience preferred

  • Experience leading or managing an Outside Sales Team preferred
