Estimator Commercial Construction
Penn State Construction | Lewistown, PA | Full-Time
Penn State Construction is seeking an Estimator to support our commercial exterior department work by developing accurate, complete, and competitive bids. This role requires strong attention to detail, clear communication, disciplined analysis, and the ability to identify risk early so projects are set up for successful execution.
Responsibilities
Prepare Accurate & Competitive Estimates
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Review plans, specifications, and bid documents to ensure full scope coverage.
- Use estimating software and digital takeoff tools accurately and consistently.
- Prepare complete bid packages that align with PSC standards and operational realities.
- Support leadership with pricing clarity for bid/no-bid and final bid decisions.
Identify Risk & Improve Predictability
- Review site conditions, logistics, schedules, and constructability requirements.
- Identify scope gaps, unclear details, and potential risks prior to bid submission.
- Collaborate with project managers and field leadership to validate production assumptions.
- Document and communicate risks clearly during pre-bid reviews.
Coordinate Subcontractor & Vendor Pricing
- Solicit, track, and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
- Ensure vendors understand scope, expectations, and bid timelines.
- Compare pricing for completeness, qualifications, and past performance.
- Maintain strong relationships with vendors to improve pricing reliability and coverage.
Support Pre-Construction & Sales Efforts
- Provide conceptual pricing and early-stage budget support.
- Assist with bid forms, pre-qualifications, and customer inquiries.
- Participate in site walks, pre-bid meetings, or customer discussions as needed.
- Represent PSC professionally with customers, vendors, architects, and engineers.
Qualifications
- Construction estimating experience (commercial, civil, site, concrete, or related fields preferred).
- Strong understanding of construction means and methods.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and bid documents.
- Proficiency with estimating software, digital takeoff tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to meet multiple deadlines.
- Clear, professional communicator who works well with PSC teams, vendors, and customers.
Working Conditions
Primarily office-based with occasional jobsite visits.
