At Jacobs, we solve the most important problems, the ones for the real world, making life simpler and more seamless along the way.
Jacobs is seeking a Statewide Traffic Management Center (STMC) Operator based in Pennsylvania's Statewide Traffic Management Office in Harrisburg, PA. In this critical role, you'll help improve the safety and mobility of millions of travelers by monitoring roadway conditions, coordinating communications, and supporting real-time incident management across the state's transportation network.
As an STMC Operator, you'll work in a fast-paced, technology-driven operations center where you'll continuously monitor traffic conditions, identify incidents, evaluate impacts, and communicate actionable information to key stakeholders. Success in this role requires someone who can learn new systems quickly, remain calm under pressure, make sound decisions with limited information, and effectively coordinate with transportation, emergency response, and public safety partners.
You'll support the safe and efficient movement of traffic through the coordinated use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), advanced communications technologies, and incident management procedures. Through monitoring CCTV video feeds and other operational systems, you'll assess traffic and roadway conditions and make independent decisions regarding incident response, traveler information messaging, and stakeholder notifications.
What You'll Do
• Monitor and evaluate real-time traffic, weather, and roadway conditions using CCTV cameras, ITS technologies, communication systems, and incident detection tools.
• Utilize multiple communication platforms, including 800 MHz radio systems, emergency service channels, and transportation management software, to gather and share critical information.
• Quickly identify, assess, and respond to traffic incidents, roadway hazards, and operational disruptions.
• Coordinate with PennDOT personnel, emergency responders, law enforcement, towing operators, and other stakeholders to support effective incident management.
• Determine the potential impact of incidents and implement traveler information strategies through Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Message Boards (VMB), and other ITS devices.
• Maintain situational awareness while managing multiple information sources in a fast-paced operational environment.
• Accurately document incidents, operational activities, and communications within agency systems.
• Provide timely notifications regarding incidents, roadway closures, weather impacts, and other conditions that may affect public safety.
The Pennsylvania Statewide Traffic Management Center maintains continuous operations. This role requires flexibility to work non-traditional schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts to support operational needs.
Here's what you'll need
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Ability to work non-traditional schedules including nights and weekends
• Strong aptitude for learning and utilizing new technologies, software applications, and communication systems.
• Ability to monitor multiple screens, communication channels, and information systems simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly convey information to internal and external stakeholders.
• Experience using communication, dispatch, monitoring, transportation, public safety, or operations center systems preferred.
• Proven ability to analyze information, solve problems, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively coordinate with diverse stakeholders during routine and emergency situations.
• Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and maintain composure during high-volume operational periods.
• Experience setting up and operating field equipment.
• Ability to use required personal protective equipment and be responsible for its care, maintenance, and storage.
