KMS Law Offices is a boutique trusts and estates firm dedicated to guiding families and fiduciaries through meaningful life transitions with clarity, professionalism, and compassion. Our practice is organized around three core areas: Estate Planning, Estate Administration, and Fiduciary Counseling.
We are seeking a Trusts & Estates Associate who will initially focus on Estate Administration and Fiduciary Counseling, while also bringing foundational Estate Planning knowledge to support client matters and grow into planning work over time.
Our firm administers estates of all sizes, and we are looking for an attorney who combines strong technical ability with empathy, professionalism, and sound judgment.
Position Overview:
This position will initially involve approximately:
- 75% Estate Administration and Fiduciary Counseling
- 25% Estate Planning
· The Associate will work closely with clients, executors, trustees, and financial advisors while collaborating with attorneys and staff across all three practice areas.
Practice Areas:
Estate Administration
- Oversee the collection of estate information and documentation.
- Coordinate asset valuation and transfers.
- Prepare and manage probate petitions and court filings.
- Review estate accountings and schedules of distribution.
- Draft receipt and release agreements and nonjudicial settlement agreements.
- Prepare petitions for adjudication and related filings.
- Guide fiduciaries through the administration process with clarity and sensitivity.
Fiduciary Counseling
- Advise trustees (individual and corporate), agents under powers of attorney, and beneficiaries regarding fiduciary responsibilities.
- Assist with complex administration issues involving trusts and estates.
- Coordinate with corporate fiduciaries.
- Address questions that arise during the administration process and help fiduciaries and beneficiaries navigate decision-making.
Estate Planning
While this role will initially focus on administration and fiduciary counseling, the Associate should have knowledge and interest in estate planning and will support planning matters as appropriate.
Responsibilities may include:
· Reviewing estate planning questionnaires and asset information
· Drafting estate planning documents
· Reviewing and assisting with beneficiary designations and transfer-on-death planning
· Coordinating with financial planners and other advisors
· Creating business entities (LLCs, LPs) for estate planning purposes
- Reviewing Operating Agreements for transfer and buy out provisions
Qualifications
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- LL.M. in Taxation preferred but not required
- Active Pennsylvania Bar membership (or ability to obtain)
- 2–5+ years of experience in trusts and estates
- Experience with estate administration/probate matters or fiduciary counseling required
- Experience with estate planning preferred but not required
- Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Experience with Lackner 6-in-1 software is preferred, but not required
- Strong drafting, writing, research, and communication skills
- Strong client and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail and strong organizational ability
- Empathy and situational awareness when working with families
- Strong time management and ability to organize and manage multiple matters and deadlines
- Clear communication with clients and advisors
- Ownership of work and an entrepreneurial mindset
- Ability to understand both technical legal issues and the broader context of a matter
- Professional appearance
