Point Park University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre to join our highly competitive, nationally recognized Musical Theatre Program. We seek a dynamic educator, artist, and leader who can contribute to the program's excellence in training the next generation of musical theatre professionals. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for an "Acting First" philosophy in teaching, a commitment to artistic innovation, and the ability to collaborate in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
This role involves teaching core Musical Theatre courses, overseeing program elements, and fostering a supportive community for students and faculty. PPU is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from underrepresented groups in the performing arts.
Primary Responsibilities
- Teaching : Deliver high-quality instruction in a range of musical theatre courses, including acting, acting through song, musical theatre script analysis, musical theatre history, acting technique, and musical theatre techniques. Develop and update curriculum to reflect current industry trends and best practices. Demonstrated potential to integrate specialized practices such as acting on camera, drawing on personal or professional experience in film, television, or digital media.
- Program Administration and Oversight : Assist in the administration and oversight of the highly competitive Musical Theatre Program, including student auditions, production coordination, curriculum planning, and program assessment. Collaborate with department leadership to enhance program reputation, recruitment, and alumni engagement.
- Mentorship and Collaboration : Mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students in their artistic and professional development, providing guidance on performance skills, career preparation, and creative projects. Foster positive relationships with students through accessible office hours, advising, and extracurricular involvement. Collaborate effectively with fellow faculty on interdisciplinary initiatives, productions, and research.
- Scholarly and Creative Activity : Maintain an active professional profile through creative professional work, research, or scholarship in musical theatre and/or related fields. Pursue tenure through a balanced portfolio of teaching, service, and artistic contributions.
- Service : Contribute to departmental, university, and community service, including committee work, recruitment events, and outreach to industry partners.
Required Qualifications
- Terminal degree (M.F.A., M.F.A. in progress or equivalent) in Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated teaching experience at the college level in any of the following: acting, acting through song, musical theatre script analysis, musical theatre history, acting technique, and musical theatre techniques.
- Demonstrated excellence and/or professional experience in performance related fields including Musical Theatre, Acting, Acting on Camera/Film
- Proven ability to administrate or oversee elements of a competitive performing arts program, such as auditions, curriculum development, or student productions, coaching, administrative management.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of working well with students including diverse student populations and collaborating effectively with faculty colleagues.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in program leadership, including recruitment, auditioning, administration, evaluation or accreditation processes in a competitive arts program.
- Professional and/or Academic experience in musical theatre performance, directing, or production, with potential to teach acting, acting on camera and/or professional hands-on experience working in film, television, or on-camera media.
- Evidence of scholarly or creative output, such as publications, professional performances, or industry credits.
- Familiarity with emerging trends in musical theatre, such as digital performance or inclusive casting practices.
