Assistant Controller
Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller supports the financial management and reporting activities of the company, ensuring accurate accounting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efficient financial operations. This role is critical in managing day-to-day accounting functions, assisting with monthly and annual closings, and providing financial insights to support decision-making in a dynamic scrap metal recycling environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Analyze financial performance, trends, and key metrics related to scrap metal pricing, inventory valuation, and recycling operations.
- Prepare and review account reconciliations and variance analyses.
Accounting Operations:
- Oversee daily accounting functions including accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), payroll, and general ledger maintenance.
- Monitor cash flow, bank reconciliations, and internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Ensure proper recording of scrap metal purchases, sales, and related inventory transactions.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Assist in developing annual budgets and periodic forecasts, working closely with operations and sales teams.
- Track budget performance and highlight variances for management review.
Compliance & Controls:
- Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
- Maintain strong internal controls over accounting processes, including scrap inventory tracking and environmental compliance costs.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to streamline financial operations, including inventory management, cost tracking, and reporting systems.
- Collaborate with operations to enhance efficiency in scrap metal purchasing, processing, and sales data integration.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Experience:
- 3–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing, recycling, or commodities industries.
- Experience with inventory accounting, commodity pricing, or scrap/recycling operations is a plus.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and meet deadlines.
