Job Description

This role operates modern wire drawing and respooling machinery to process large steel wire spools into finished products that meet precise customer specifications. You will set up, run, and adjust equipment, perform basic preventative maintenance, and ensure all products meet quality standards while working safely in a clean, organized manufacturing environment. Positions are available on 2nd and 3rd shift, with comprehensive training provided on 1st shift.

Responsibilities

  • Operate digital controlled respooling and wire drawing machinery and auxiliary equipment to produce high-quality wire products that meet customer specifications and production goals.
  • Load raw wire material, correctly feed wire through machinery and dies, and remove, package, and label finished product according to requirements.
  • Change machinery over from one product or package to another, including setting up and adjusting equipment for different wire sizes and coatings.
  • Perform quality welds using the appropriate butt welder for the type and size of wire to ensure continuous, defect-free production.
  • Complete operator-level preventative maintenance on all assigned production and support equipment to maintain reliable and efficient operation.
  • Adjust machinery settings, with guidance from management and production supervisors, to achieve the most efficient and optimal operation.
  • Maintain accurate production and quality records, including measurements using tape measures, micrometers, and calipers, and record data using the metric system.
  • Understand and monitor product quality, delivery requirements, and scrap measurements, and take appropriate action to minimize waste and meet deadlines.
  • Operate equipment safely at all times, follow all safety procedures and policies, and consistently wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards so the next operator can work in a safe and efficient environment.
  • Take and pass OSHA-approved forklift training, maintain a valid forklift license, and operate a forklift as an essential part of daily tasks.
  • Perform lockout/tagout and other safety protocols as required during machine operation, setup, and maintenance activities.
  • Visually inspect wire and equipment during operation to identify defects, irregularities, or potential issues and take corrective action.
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment and process problems using standard problem-solving methods and work with support personnel to resolve issues.
  • Apply common-sense methods when carrying out written and oral instructions and follow established procedures consistently.
  • Participate in training sessions, employee meetings, committees, and project teams as appropriate to improve skills and support continuous improvement.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with changing priorities, supporting coworkers and collaborating to meet production goals.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned to support production, quality, and safety objectives.
  • Regularly push, pull, roll, and lift items up to 70 pounds and perform all essential physical demands required in the manufacturing environment.

Essential Skills

  • At least two years of experience working in an industrial or manufacturing facility with machine operation or production responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Experience with machine operation of any kind, including basic setup, adjustment, and safe operation.
  • Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate in English to follow instructions, complete documentation, and coordinate with team members.
  • Willingness to learn and use tape measures, micrometers, and calipers, including comfort with the metric measurement system.
  • Ability to perform simple mental calculations (addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers) and use a calculator for more complex mathematics.
  • Capability to troubleshoot problems using standard problem-solving methods and effectively direct support personnel in resolving issues.
  • Ability to apply common-sense methods when performing written or oral instructions and follow established procedures accurately.
  • Physical ability to push, pull, roll items, and lift up to 70 pounds regularly, and to perform all essential work-related physical demands.
  • Commitment to safety, including adherence to safety procedures, proper use of PPE, and understanding of lockout/tagout practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Tenure and stability in previous machine operator or industrial roles, demonstrating reliability and long-term commitment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Technical school education or vocational training in a mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing discipline is a plus.
  • Experience with machine setup and changeover between different products or packages.
  • Previous weld experience, especially butt welding for wire products, is beneficial.
  • Prior forklift experience and safety certification, with the ability to obtain and maintain an OSHA-approved forklift license.
  • Familiarity with calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and other precision measurement tools, particularly using the metric system.
  • Understanding of visual inspection techniques to ensure product quality and identify defects.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance on production and support equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively in small team environments and collaborate with maintenance and production staff.
  • Comfort working with safety protocols such as lockout/tagout and other industrial safety procedures.

Work Environment

The facility is a smaller, close-knit manufacturing shop with roughly 12–15 employees on 1st shift, including maintenance, and about 3–4 employees on 2nd shift, including maintenance. It is a typical manufacturing environment that is kept very organized, with strong attention to maintaining a clean and safe workspace. Work is performed on modern, digitally controlled wire drawing and respooling machinery and related auxiliary equipment, with regular use of measurement tools such as tape measures, micrometers, and calipers. Safety is a core priority, with required safety-toed shoes and ear protection, adherence to safety procedures, and participation in OSHA-approved forklift training. Shifts operate as follows: 1st shift runs 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 2nd shift runs 2:00 p.m.–10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 3rd shift runs 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The work involves regular physical activity, including pushing, pulling, rolling items, and lifting up to 70 pounds, in a fast-paced production setting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $24.00/hr.
