The Technical Manager oversees and contributes to the engineering strategy and execution for Wharton's Generative AI Labs (GAIL), translating cutting‑edge research into working open‑source prototypes and scalable tools. They collaborate closely with Wharton Computing, faculty researchers, and external partners to ensure strong technical integration and shared innovation. Reporting to the Executive Director of GAIL and collaborating closely with GAIL's Co-Directors, affiliated scholars, and staff, this person architects systems, mentors developers and students, and enables projects to rapidly move from prototype to products that elevate research, teaching, and professional practice. As GAIL's work evolves, this role may take on broader responsibility for scaling technical infrastructure and deepening the technical capabilities of the existing team. Wharton's Generative AI Labs (GAIL) sits at the intersection of world-class research and rapid prototyping, building open-source tools that will change how people work and learn. This position is designed for someone who thrives on turning ideas into working systems and helping others level up in the process. We're looking for a rare kind of leader-builder: someone who can architect and ship code one hour, then mentor a team or steer a moon-shot project plan the next. - Lead architecture & delivery of LLM-powered prototypes
- Coordinate and mentor an internal engineering team and contractors to develop and implement projects.
- Pair with researchers to translate ideas into open-source products
- Align prototypes with Wharton Computing infrastructure & policies
- Present demos and technical road-maps to stakeholders
Required - Bachelor's degree; 3-5 years of experience; 5+ yrs software engineering (2+ yrs tech lead), preferred; full‑cycle delivery of AI-powered applications (e.g., generative AI, LLMs, multimodal models, or emerging technologies); Python fluency plus a second server-side language; cloud &
GPU proficiency; record of mentoring. Preferred - Master's degree; expertise in TypeScript and good architectural familiarity with
cloud technologies such as AWS, GCP or Azure; startup or high-growth experience. Job Location - City, State

$100,000.00 - $160,000.00 Annual Rate
Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job's level.
