Senior project engineer
Summary:
BDRCK is seeking a Senior Project Engineer (part-time, 1099) to lead electro-mechanical design and delivery work for rail transportation and renewable-energy projects. You will own work packages from requirements through field-ready documentation while keeping projects moving with pragmatic, high-quality execution. This is a flexible consulting role with the potential to scale into a full-time position as our business grows.
Essential Functions:
You will own delivery for small to mid-sized work packages from scoping through handoff, partnering with the Principal, clients, and fabricators/field engineering teams.
- BDRCK Representation: This is a client-facing role in which the incumbent will directly represent BDRCK and consistently engage in behaviors that win new clients and maintain existing clients.
- Project Engineering & Execution : Own the scope definition, requirements capture, schedule/critical-path inputs, risk/issue tracking, progress reporting, and formal communications for assigned client projects. Client-focused attitude is required.
- Technical Design Leadership: Work independently and also direct sub-contractors in the creation of mechanical/electro-mechanical designs; coordinate single-line diagrams, wiring lists, panel layouts, bills of material; review shop drawings; and drive design reviews. Familiarity with Autodesk products is required. The incumbent will be required to bring their own CAD-capable computer workstation and will be provided with both an Autodesk software license and Microsoft 365 business subscription owned by BDRCK.
- Manufacturing Vendor Coordination : Coordinate with suppliers and contract manufacturers, support installation/commissioning documentation, and conduct as-built verifications,.
- Quality & Compliance : Ensure and validate deliverables meet client/BDRCK standards and relevant codes/standards (e.g., NEC/NFPA where applicable); maintain organized model/drawing archives and revision control.
- Client Partnership: run efficient touchpoints, set expectations, surface trade-offs, and keep decisions moving— progress over perfection.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- 6+ years in project engineering or systems integration for electro-mechanical products or infrastructure (rail/transportation, energy, or manufacturing strongly preferred).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and a parametric 3D CAD tool (Inventor/SolidWorks/Fusion). Able to produce fabrication-ready prints, clear redlines, and 100+ sheet books of plans.
- Strong written/verbal communication; comfortable leading technical reviews and vendor/client calls (Teams/SharePoint/Office).
- Proven accountability, work planning capability, and successful alignment of stakeholders in remote working environment.
Compensation & Engagement:
- Type : Independent Contractor (1099)
- Hours : Part-time; project-dependent, typically 10-20 hours per week to start, with potential to increase as workload grows
- Tracking : Hours to be logged via work diary and submitted via Gusto; payments issued on a bi-weekly schedule
- Travel : In-person weekly meeting with Principal in Pittsburgh, PA
- Rate : Competitive hourly consulting rate, commensurate with experience and scope.
