Manual Machinist

The Manual Machinist operates large manual machines to manufacture precision parts from various materials. Reads engineering drawings, performs accurate measurements, and ensures quality standards. Supports other manufacturing tasks and maintains a safe, organized work environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Set up and operate manual machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, etc.) to mill, drill, tap, turn, bore, slot, grind, and assemble precision parts
  • Select proper tools, speeds, and feeds based on material type and job specifications
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work orders to plan machining operations
  • Perform layout operations and mark reference points and dimensions on raw materials
  • Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, dial indicators, verniers, etc.) to ensure work meets specified tolerances
  • Conduct in-process and final inspections to verify part accuracy and quality
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance on machines to ensure optimal operation
  • Identify and verify materials prior to machining, ensuring correct type and traceability where required
  • Maintain accurate documentation and production records
  • Follow 5S principles to ensure a clean, safe, and organized work area
  • Communicate with supervisors, engineers, and quality personnel to resolve issues and suggest process improvements
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts for material staging and handling
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and company policies
  • Support other manufacturing operations as required; perform other duties as assigned
  • Continuously seek improvements in safety, quality, lead times, and cost reduction through teamwork and personal initiative
When selecting candidates, we will be looking for the following:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
  • Proficient in using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, dial indicators)
  • Strong understanding of machining processes and tolerances.
Other valued, but non-essential skills, abilities, and experience include
  • 5+ years of machining experience in a manufacturing or job shop environment
  • Prior work experience operating large, horizontal centering manual lathe strongly preferred
  • CNC horizontal lathe experience is a plus.
  • Completion of a formal machinist apprenticeship or technical training program
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement tools (e.g., Kaizen, Lean, 5S)
  • Experience performing layout and setup for complex parts
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods (up to 8–10 hours)
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs independently
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating tools and precision instruments
  • Visual acuity for reading blueprints and using measuring equipment
  • Work in a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, oil, and machining debris
  • Occasional exposure to elevated temperatures and moving mechanical parts
  • Regular use of cutting fluids, lubricants, and coolants
  • Must wear appropriate PPE, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots
