Position Summary

LASP seeks a Helpline Intake Staff Attorney to join its Centralized Telephone Intake Helpline. This position serves as the first point of contact for individuals seeking legal assistance and plays a critical role in ensuring timely, accurate intake, eligibility screening, and delivery of legal advice and referrals.

The Helpline Intake Staff Attorney conducts client interviews, completes eligibility and compliance documentation, performs initial fact investigation and limited legal research, and provides advice and brief services. The attorney works closely with the Helpline Supervising Attorney to determine appropriate next steps, including referrals to LASP local offices or specialty units. The position may carry a small caseload involving brief services. Staff currently work on a hybrid basis, with both in-office and remote responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Client Intake, Advice, and Brief Services

  • Conducting preliminary and follow-up client interviews by telephone, online platforms, and in person
  • Screening clients to determine eligibility for LASP services and compliance with funding requirements
  • Ascertain and investigating facts and conduct limited legal research
  • Advising clients regarding legal issues, options, and next steps
  • Providing brief services where appropriate and coordinate referrals for extended representation

Case Management and Coordination

  • Maintaining accurate and timely case records in LASP’s LegalServer case management system
  • Working in consultation with the Helpline Supervising Attorney to determine levels of service and appropriate referrals
  • Referring cases internally to LASP offices and specialty units, including Employment, Public Benefits, Family Law, Housing, Consumer, Bankruptcy, Utilities, and related areas

Community and Program Support

  • Participating in clinics, community education events, and workshops
  • Engaging in external professional and community organizations relevant to serving vulnerable populations
  • Developing knowledge of community needs and referral resources
  • Participating in LASP-wide initiatives, affinity groups, and task forces

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Enhancing substantive knowledge and skills through trainings, CLEs, and professional development
  • Abiding by all applicable professional standards of ethics and practice
  • Completing required administrative tasks, including timekeeping, case notes, and file maintenance
  • Ensuring compliance with grant and contract requirements and assist with reporting as needed
  • Performing other duties as assigned in support of program and organizational goals

Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania, or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in Pennsylvania
  • Minimum two (2) years of legal experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and serving low-income and vulnerable populations
  • Strong written, oral advocacy, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, legal case management systems, and online legal research tools
  • Spanish language fluency preferred
