Job Summary
The Automation Technician provides technical support to plant teams, ensuring smooth operation of electrical and automation systems.
This role involves troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing equipment, as well as training technicians and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
The technician will work across shifts and may be required to adjust schedules to meet business needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical/electronic components including motors, controllers, PLCs, and solid-state devices
- Perform root cause analysis and implement reliability improvements
- Interpret and design electrical schematics and control circuits (hard-wired and PLC logic)
- Calibrate electronic instrumentation such as flowmeters, transmitters, and control valves
- Coordinate project installations with contractors and ensure quality completion
- Provide technical direction and training to other technicians
- Utilize software tools including RS Logix, PanelBuilder, RS View Studio, Intouch Graphics, and AutoCAD
- Support network protocols such as ControlNet, DeviceNet, DH+, Ethernet TCP/IP, and Sercos
- Operate and maintain vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Omron)
- Maintain documentation and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams
- Participate in weekend on-call rotation and adjust schedule as needed
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree in electrical/electronics maintenance or related technical field
- OR completion of an approved apprenticeship program or military equivalent
- OR ISA Certified Control Systems Technician Level 1
- 3–5 years of experience in technical support or engineering within a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated knowledge of the National Electrical Code
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to work extended shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed
- No active Level 1 Corrective Action within the past 12 months
- Current forklift certification or ability to obtain; ability to operate a scissors lift
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with advanced control concepts and motion control systems
- Familiarity with ladder logic, function block diagrams, VB script, and motion technologies
- Leadership experience and ability to mentor team members
- Desire for continuous learning and skill development
Certifications
- ISA Certified Control Systems Technician Level 1 (if applicable)
- Forklift Certification (or ability to obtain)
