Description
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Carnegie Mellon University Libraries seeks a collaborative, student-centered, and innovative faculty librarian to serve as the Undergraduate Experience & Student Success Librarian. This new role is rooted in CMU’s commitment to holistic student success, wellbeing, and belonging, working in partnership with units such as Student Success, Student Affairs, Community Wellbeing, orientation programs, and academic partners including first-year writing initiatives.
The successful candidate will cultivate meaningful relationships with students, staff, and faculty; collaborate with library faculty and information specialists to design and coordinate programs and services that support academic, social, and emotional success; and foster welcoming spaces and experiences both within the Libraries and across campus.
We are looking for someone who:
Is passionate about working directly with students to enhance their sense of academic confidence, belonging, and engagement
Values interdisciplinary and co-curricular collaboration
Is excited to partner with campus units supporting orientation, first-year experience, wellbeing, and student affairs
Has experience designing and assessing programs, workshops, and services that support undergraduate development
We welcome candidates from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, including but not limited to librarianship, education, student affairs, wellness, or related fields.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As the Undergraduate Experience & Student Success Librarian, you will work across campus and within the Libraries to create, coordinate, and assess initiatives that support undergraduate engagement, wellbeing, and academic success throughout the student lifecycle.
Specifically, you will:
Build and sustain partnerships with units involved in student success, wellbeing, orientation, first-year experience, advising, and student affairs to integrate library expertise into campus-wide initiatives.
Design and facilitate programs and workshops that support undergraduate academic success, information literacy, research skills, digital literacy, and holistic wellbeing (e.g., relaxation/study breaks, stress-management events, peer mentoring programs, and skills workshops).
Collaborate with faculty and staff on projects such as curriculum-embedded instruction for first-year writing and other interdisciplinary learning communities, orientation activities, and initiatives that foster student belonging.
Support inviting and accessible experiences within library spaces by developing services, events, and outreach that reflect the needs and voices of a wide range of undergraduate populations.
Participate in assessment and evaluation of undergraduate engagement and success initiatives, using data and feedback to refine programming and demonstrate impact.
Develop digital and in-person resources that help students navigate academic expectations, Library services, research tools, wellbeing resources, and campus support systems.
Serve as a visible advocate for the undergraduate experience in campus forums, committees, and shared governance activities related to student success and libraries.
This role encourages innovation, proactive engagement, and co-creation of meaningful experiences that help students thrive academically and personally at CMU.
The Libraries recognize that no single individual can be all things for students, and this role is designed to work collaboratively within the Libraries and across campus to meet complex and evolving needs.
Qualifications
WHAT WE REQUIRE
The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree (MLIS/MLS or another relevant master’s degree) and experience in academic libraries, student engagement, student affairs, wellbeing programming, or related areas.
Candidates should demonstrate:
Experience working directly with undergraduate students in academic, co-curricular, or student success contexts
Ability to design, implement, and assess student-focused programs or services
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build partnerships and work collaboratively across units
Prior experience fostering a welcoming environment and supporting students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences
Comfort with outreach, public programming, and engaging students in both physical and virtual spaces
Familiarity with current trends in student success, digital literacy, wellbeing integration, and academic engagement
Preferred qualifications include:
Experience in orientation, first-year experience programs, or student affairs collaborations
Background in community wellbeing initiatives
Knowledge of learner centered pedagogy or developmental frameworks
Experience with assessment methods and using data to inform program improvements
YOUR FACULTY STATUS
This position is a library faculty appointment, with rank and salary commensurate with experience. As a faculty librarian, you will contribute to the research, teaching, and service mission of the university through excellence in librarianship, professional engagement, and scholarship. In addition to stewarding student-focused initiatives, you will be encouraged and supported in developing or continuing your own program of scholarship that aligns with your role. Scholarly work may take a variety of forms, including publications, applied or collaborative research projects, digital or computational scholarship, creative work, and professional contributions.
Library faculty participate in governance and service through committees, working groups, and other forms of shared leadership. Expectations for reappointment and promotion are guided by the university’s policies for librarian and archivist faculty and emphasize intellectual contribution, professional growth, and impact.
