Open Date: Aug 20, 2024
Deadline:

The Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) invites applications for a standing faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in large animal reproduction. The Department is seeking candidates with a strong interest in equine reproduction. The position will be in the Standing Faculty in the Clinician-Educator (CE) track, which focuses on clinical service, teaching, and research. A typical division of effort for faculty in the CE track at New Bolton Center is 70% time on clinics, including clinical service and clinical teaching, and 30% time off clinics for academic efforts, including independent or collaborative research that produces scholarly publications in their area of expertise. The division of effort can be modified according to the focus of the successful candidate. Didactic and laboratory teaching and administrative or other service duties are included in both on and off-clinic time.

PLEASE NOTE: a single position in large animal reproduction will be filled, but applications are also being accepted for the position in our Academic Clinician track, which focuses on clinical service and teaching and has no research requirement. Please see position number: for further details on the position as Academic Clinician .

The successful candidate is expected to enhance the clinical, teaching, and research missions of the Section of Reproduction and Behavior and the Hofmann Center for Animal Reproduction. New Bolton Center is home to five Diplomates of the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT), one Board-certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, who is also an Honorary Member of the ACT, and two residents in training for ACT board-certification. Candidates with a strong interest in equine reproduction are encouraged to apply, with the opportunity and support to further specialize in male or female reproduction. The large clinical caseload at New Bolton Center also offers many opportunities for reproduction work in non-equine species. The Hofmann Center accommodates an active in-house clinical reproduction practice supported by advanced technologies in mare reproductive diagnosis, treatment and management; stallion breeding soundness evaluation and breeding management; embryo transfer; transvaginal follicle aspiration for oocyte recovery; stallion and mare behavior evaluation and therapy; and interaction with the Penn Equine Assisted Reproduction Laboratory (PEARL) which conducts clinical work and research in in vitro embryo production. In addition, Section members provide reproductive services at New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals, including management of healthy and high-risk pregnancy cases. Section members partner with the Neonatal Intensive Care and the Emergency and Critical Care Services of the Hospital to oversee reproductive emergency cases. Additional clinical opportunities include on-farm equine reproductive management for breeding centers in the service area.

The internationally renowned New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals enjoys one of the highest caseloads among peer institutions, admitting almost 7000 patients in 2024. The Department of Clinical Studies - New Bolton Center is home to over 40 diplomates of American and European specialty colleges who are in direct support of the program, including 14 double-boarded individuals. High-quality clinical and didactic teaching is expected of CE faculty, and students enrolled at Penn Vet are highly qualified, motivated, and eager to learn. The 26 Clinician-Educators and 10 Tenure-track faculty perform the majority of the Department's research, along with residents working on residency projects, post-residency graduate students enrolled in Penn's Biomedical Graduate Studies program through funding by New Bolton Center's Penn Veterinary Scientist Training program, and post-doctoral trainees, fellows, and visiting scholars.

New Bolton Center is located on 700 rolling acres of beautiful pastoral land in Kennett Square , Chester County , Pennsylvania in close proximity to Philadelphia and major metropolitan and cultural centers. The successful candidate has the potential to access the Veterinary School's 200-cow Marshak Dairy and the 250-sow Penn Swine Teaching & Research Center . There is a strong scientific presence in reproductive biology on both our New Bolton Center and Philadelphia campuses, with extensive opportunities for collaboration at the intersection of science and health care technology. Key associated departments and initiatives include basic research in reproduction with a focus on oocyte meiosis and embryo development in Penn Vet's Biomedical Sciences department, as well as Pathobiology , Wildlife Futures , the Center for Stewardship Agriculture and Food Security , the Institute for Infectious and Zoonotic Disease (IIZD), and the Center for Host-Microbial Interactions (CHMI) .
