Affordable Pennsylvania Communications Director

Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy
Pittsburgh, PA

Job Title: Affordable Pennsylvania Communications Director

Location: Philadelphia, Allentown, Scranton, or Harrisburg, PA

Reports To: Rachele Fortier, Pennsylvania State Director, CFFE

Time Commitment/Classification : Full Time/Exempt

WHO WE ARE:

The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy (CFFE) is fighting for a future where all people can afford to care for themselves and their loved ones. We do this by building momentum to pass policies that lower costs for families, like paid family and medical leave, quality, affordable child care, and home and community-based care for the aging and disabled.

Affordable Pennsylvania, a project of CFFE, is fighting to expose elected leaders who promised to stand with working families and lower costs, only to take vote after vote neglecting the needs of their constituents. We do this by making Pennsylvanians’ voices heard and pushing members of Congress to take meaningful action to address the skyrocketing cost of things like groceries, utility bills, and health care.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

We are looking for an experienced campaigner to lead communications for a large-scale issue advocacy effort in Pennsylvania.

The Communications Director will develop and execute a robust communications strategy to hold members of Congress accountable to their constituents for their issue stances across the Lehigh Valley, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and the Capitol Region. The Communications Director works closely with the Pennsylvania Campaign Director and Organizing Director to shape the communications strategy across district campaigns on progressive economic issues that impact working families. The ideal candidate is someone who is well-versed in the policy and political media environment, has experience working directly with press, and is not afraid of taking on new opportunities to move people to action or quickly responding to an ever-changing news cycle.

As Pennsylvania Communications Director, you will:

  • Develop and manage a comprehensive strategic communications plan, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Campaign Director and Organizing Director, to maximize earned media coverage of our strategic narrative and accountability efforts across districts.
  • Pitch and build relationships with reporters in the state to cover our work across the districts.
  • Generate a high volume of earned media hits.
  • Develop and manage day-to-day communications materials, rapid response efforts, and press around events as needed.
  • Draft social media content and manage accounts across platforms to ensure message alignment
  • Develop website copy for the organization and continuously update the website with press materials.
  • Collaborate on the creation of creative content, such as graphics and video to spread the organization's message.
  • Work with the team to recruit, media train, and pitch strategic messengers.
  • Brainstorm and deploy creative earned media tactics.
  • Serve as a chief spokesperson to the press for our program issues in Pennsylvania.
  • Track earned media clips and report on program progress and success weekly.

About you:

  • You have significant relevant work experience building and deploying local, statewide, and/or national communications strategies.
  • Have significant relevant work experience on issue advocacy and/or campaigns.
  • You have experience with and will be comfortable building relationships with local, state, and national reporters– including some of your own reporter relationships.
  • You can build a communications strategy that communicates to diverse constituencies within the state.
  • You are familiar with how to communicate about progressive issues.
  • You have experience pitching press for in-person and virtual events or actions that garner earned media attention for a political or issue-based campaign.
  • You are calm under pressure and nimble in a changing campaign environment.
  • You are willing to work campaign hours, including nights and weekends.
  • You are willing and able to travel.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and reliable access to a vehicle.
  • You are willing to perform other duties as assigned.

In addition, it would be a bonus if you:

  • Are a big picture thinker, detail-oriented, and analytical.
  • Have a strong sense of adventure and interest in tackling new challenges.
  • Are familiar with issues important to state residents.
  • Have a connection to the state and its communities, such as having lived or worked there.
  • Have experience communicating with communities of color and the working class.
  • Have experience practicing and/or facilitating equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Have pre-existing relationships with local reporters and experience with local outlets.
  • Have experience with lobbying, advocacy, and educational activities.
  • Are fluent in both English and Spanish.

Benefits and compensation:

Salary range: $75,000 - $85,000 / year

Access to a shared cost health premium reimbursement program for eligible medical plans, as well as earned paid time off for holidays, vacations, and sick days is available to employees of the organization. We provide mileage reimbursement at the Federal rate.
