We are looking for a Rail Infrastructure Manufacturing Engineer Intern. This position will be based at our Munhall area branch located in Pennsylvania.
During your summer journey with us, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the Manufacturing Engineering Department where you will learn how a Manufacturing Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to ensure products are made efficiently, cost-effectively, and with high quality. Also, you will have an opportunity to work with a team that leads large-scale projects that have an impact in the way people use rail transportation today.

A little bit about us
Siemens Mobility provides efficient and coordinated transportation of people and goods by rail – including rolling stock, rail automation, rail electrification, and service. We craft and manufacture across the entire spectrum of rolling stock, including commuter and regional passenger trains, light rail and streetcars, metros, locomotives, passenger coaches, and high-speed trainsets. Cities and Railroads also rely on us to provide traction-power substations and electricity transmission, as well as signaling and control technology for freight and passenger rail and transit systems.
How does Manufacturing plays into the big picture?
Core Responsibilities
1. Process Design & Optimization
o Develop and improve manufacturing processes for productivity, safety, and quality.
o Use lean manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to reduce waste and variation.
2. Equipment & Tooling
o Select, design, and maintain machinery, tools, and fixtures.
o Ensure equipment meets production requirements and complies with standards.
3. Quality Assurance
o Implement quality control measures and ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., ISO, ANSI/ESD, IPC).
o Work closely with QA teams to resolve defects and improve product reliability.
4. Workflow & Layout
o Design efficient plant layouts and material flow to minimize bottlenecks.
o Optimize ergonomics and safety for operators.
5. Cost Reduction
o Analyze production costs and identify opportunities for savings without compromising quality.
o Support budgeting and cost estimation for new projects.
6. Continuous Improvement
o Drive Kaizen events and continuous improvement initiatives.
o Monitor KPIs like cycle time, yield, and throughput.
7. Collaboration
o Work with design engineers, production teams, and suppliers to ensure manufacturability.
o Support new product introduction (NPI) and scale-up.
What your day-to-day will look like:
• Will be assigned one small project to complete during internship under the guidance of your mentor.
• Documentation of processes on the production floor.
• Work alongside ME on continuous improvement opportunities.

Who Should Apply?
• Education / Majors: Current sophomore or junior undergraduates pursuing a BA/BS from an accredited college or university and majoring in Manufacturing Engineering with strong technical or analytical aptitude
• Availability: 40 hours per week from June to August
• Work Authorization: Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without the need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization
• Prior internship or co-op experience (preferred) with a preferred cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Demonstrated leadership potential
• Strong analytical, writing, presentation, and critical-thinking skills
• Industry knowledge and/or interest
You’ll benefit from:
The hourly pay range for this position is $25 - $30 per hour, based off of your projected graduation year. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications, and premium geographic location. Additionally, interns for Siemens are eligible to contribute into our 401K program.
