UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Women’s Hospital OR!

Operating Room nurses play a vital role in the surgical team. This role is dedicated to intraoperative responsibilities, including preparing and maintaining the sterile field, assisting surgeons as a scrub or circulating nurse, managing surgical instruments and supplies, and ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure. The ideal candidate will demonstrate precision, adaptability, and strong collaboration within a fast-paced surgical environment.

Hours : This position is full-time: two 8-hour shifts, two 12-hour shifts, occasional 3 rd shifts and rotating holidays

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse OR is a Registered Nurse who plays a key role in delivering high-quality patient care. This role involves setting care standards and maintaining accountability for nursing practices. The nurse manages care for patients and their families using independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with the healthcare team. As a leader and partner in care, the nurse builds strong relationships with physicians, other providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes. The position reflects a commitment to both the nursing profession and the broader community, emphasizing teamwork, compassion, and excellence throughout the continuum of care.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues within an episode of care.
  • Practices solid communication skills and effectively articulates the patient’s condition to other care providers.
  • Negotiates and recommends changes in patient care and unit practices.
  • Ensures comprehensive documentation that promotes communication between caregivers.
  • Incorporates national professional organization standards and system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Creates a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles and applies them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff.
  • Provides detailed and appropriate education to guide patients and families through care transitions.
  • Supports the development of students, new staff, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor.
  • Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback and improving practice.
  • Actively participates in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and communicates them to colleagues and management.
  • Takes personal responsibility for improving patient satisfaction with care and service.
  • Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care improvements.
  • Discusses quality improvement opportunities during multidisciplinary rounds and influences patient care plans.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally.

  • Performs scrub role (required for RNs hired on or after July 1, 2023).
