General Counselor - J&R Day Camp, Summer 2026
Who We Are
J&R Day Camp is located in Monroeville, PA. Owned and operated by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, J&R is a co-ed day camp with an emphasis on team building, developing positive values, independence and premiere programming and activities. Our child-centered environment focuses on creating community and enriching the lives of our campers, families and staff. We serve children ages 5-14 through meaningful experiences that focus on building connections, teaching values, fostering individual growth and having fun. The JCC Day Camp experience supports, nourishes and sustains our campers, families and staff. We are professionals who have chosen to make a difference.
J&R Day Camp is open and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or special need by welcoming individuals of all backgrounds, embracing their uniqueness and diversity under our communal tent.
J&R Day Camp strives to create connections among campers, families and staff. We grow our campers through the lens of strong Jewish values and morals. Our facilities and experiences create an atmosphere of safety and fun for each person involved.
General Responsibilities: Supervises campers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being. Maintains daily schedule for campers.
Desired Qualifications:
- Desire and willingness to work with children outdoors in a day camp setting
- Must be at least 15 years old by June 15, 2026
- Ability and willingness to accept supervision and guidance
- Good character, integrity, and adaptability
Specific Responsibilities:
- Participate in Staff Orientation Week (June 15-19, 2026)
- Actively participate in all staff training and meetings
- Be responsible for the general health and safety of assigned campers
- Establish an atmosphere of security, enjoyment, and belonging for all campers
- Develop a positive relationship with each camper
- Work with Unit head to manage allergies of campers in your group
- Provide opportunities for all campers to be successful at camp
- Communicate matters of concern regarding a camper or the group to Unit Head
- Enforce camp safety regulations
- Work effectively with co counselor to ensure the physical, mental, and social well-being of all campers
- Implement group or unit activity plans as requested by the Unit Head
- Always supervise campers under immediate care during the camp day including counselor and specialist led activities, camper arrival, mealtimes, swim lesson, and dismissal
- Actively participate in all camper activities and specialty areas
- Set a good example in all areas of camp life, act as a role model and contributing member of the camp team
- Communicate with Unit Head in matters involving rules, safety, and programming
- Willingness to become knowledgeable in and implement Positive Behavior Support techniques and strategies
- Work closely with Inclusion counselor and coordinator to ensure all campers are set up for success
- Share all responsibilities with other staff assigned to your group
- Remain at camp for late stays and overnights as necessary
Additional Responsibilities
- Set a good example for campers including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing cleanup, and sportsmanship
- Follow camp rules and regulations
- Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities
- Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy
- Additional responsibilities as assigned
Compensation:
- Level 1 Counselor – $1,700
- Level 2 Counselor – $1,800-$2,450
- Level 3 Counselor – $2,500-$3,050
- Level 4 Counselor – $3,100-$3,450
- Level 5 Counselor – $3,500-$3,850
Bonuses:
- 100% Club: Awarded to staff members that work 44 full days of camp and attend all staff meetings Levels 1-2 $500, Levels 3-5 $1000
- 39 Day Club: Awarded to staff members that work 39 full days of camp and attend all staff meetings Levels 1-2 $350, Levels 3-5 $700
- Bus Brigade: Awarded to staff members for actively monitoring campers, ensuring proper behavior, and maintaining a safe environment on the school bus. This bonus recognizes the extra responsibility and vigilance required to protect the well-being of all passengers during transport Bus Captain- $350, Bus Monitor- $200
- Camp Crew Builder: Refer a friend that works 6 weeks of camp or more $250/referral (max of 4)
- Cornerstone: Returning staff who are selected to participate in the FJC Cornerstone Fellowship and attend the Cornerstone Seminar and implement follow-up programming at camp $250
Bonuses will be awarded in final paycheck – at the discretion of camp administration

Essential Job Duties:
While performing the above duties, this position routinely requires handling persons and/or objects and moving safely throughout the building. This position may include walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. This position requires communicating, either verbally or in writing. This position frequently requires moving items weighing up to 25 pounds. This position occasionally requires moving items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to complete all essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
Must be able to obtain ACT 33/34 and FBI clearances and mandated reporter training.
