Applications Engineering, Sr Staff Engineer
We Are
Synopsys is the leader in engineering solutions from silicon to systems, enabling customers to rapidly innovate AI-powered products. We deliver industry-leading silicon design, IP, simulation and analysis solutions, and design services. We partner closely with our customers across a wide range of industries to maximize their R&D capability and productivity, powering innovation today that ignites the ingenuity of tomorrow.
You Are
You have spent years translating engineering theory into mission-critical applications, and you know that the best software in the world means nothing if it does not solve the problem your customer is actually facing. You think in workflows, not features. When someone describes a mission requirement, you are already mapping out how Systems Tool Kit, orbital mechanics, and custom scripting can get them to an answer they can trust.
You are comfortable being the technical anchor in a room full of government stakeholders who need clarity, not jargon. You do not wait for perfect specs. You ask the right questions, build what is needed, and iterate as the mission evolves. You have worked in environments where security clearances matter, timelines are real, and the work you do directly affects national defense outcomes.
You have written code that integrates tools, automates workflows, or builds custom interfaces, and you have done it in Python, C++, MATLAB, or something close. You are organized enough to manage multiple projects across different stakeholders and autonomous enough that no one has to check in on you to know the work is moving.
At Synopsys, you will be embedded with a key Aerospace and Defense customer, serving as the technical expert who makes Digital Mission Engineering software work in the real world.
What You'll Be Doing
- Serve as the onsite subject matter expert embedded with a major Aerospace and Defense customer, providing modeling, analysis, and technical leadership using Systems Tool Kit, Test and Evaluation Tool Kit, and related DME software
- Design and develop custom user interfaces, automation scripts, and integration code in Python, C++, C#, Java, or MATLAB to solve real-world mission engineering problems
- Work directly with customer teams to understand system-level engineering requirements, translate those into software solutions, and implement best practices for mission simulation and orbital analysis
- Collaborate with Account Managers to identify and mature new sales opportunities by demonstrating technical value, articulating use cases, and expanding software adoption within the customer organization
- Plan and deliver technical training sessions and seminars to educate end users, drive software adoption, and ensure customers are leveraging the full capability of the toolset
- Partner with Synopsys product development teams to translate customer feedback into product enhancements, test new releases on real mission scenarios, and influence the roadmap
- Manage multiple concurrent workstreams and projects with a high degree of autonomy, adjusting priorities as customer needs shift and ensuring timely delivery without close supervision
The Impact You Will Have
- Enable a critical Aerospace and Defense customer to solve complex mission engineering challenges faster and with greater confidence using Synopsys DME software
- Drive measurable growth in software adoption and revenue within a strategic account by identifying new use cases, expanding workflows, and proving technical value
- Reduce time-to-insight for mission analysts by building custom automation, integrations, and interfaces that streamline their workflows
- Influence the future direction of Synopsys Digital Mission Engineering products by bringing real customer requirements and mission scenarios back to the product team
- Strengthen customer relationships and retention by serving as a trusted technical advisor who consistently delivers solutions that work
- Expand the footprint of model-based systems engineering, simulation process management, and digital mission engineering practices across the customer organization
- Build repeatable technical patterns and best practices that can be scaled to other government and defense customers
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related technical field with 6+ years of professional experience in an engineering software environment, or Master's degree with 2+ years
- Active TS/SCI security clearance, or the ability and willingness to obtain one
- Strong technical background in orbital mechanics, orbit analysis, and hands-on experience with AGI Orbit Determination Toolkit and Systems Toolkit or equivalent mission engineering software
- Programming experience in one or more of the following: Python, C, C++, C#, Java, or MATLAB, with demonstrated ability to write automation scripts, custom integrations, or user interfaces
- Proven ability to work directly with customers to understand complex engineering requirements, translate them into software solutions, and deliver results in a timeline-driven environment
- Experience with process integration, optimization, systems engineering, mission simulation, PLM, PDM, SPDM, or CAD software packages
- 10+ years of experience (BS), 5+ years (MS), or 2+ years (PhD) in engineering software environments is preferred, as is experience preparing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and executive audiences
Who You Are
- You can walk into a customer meeting, listen to a mission problem, and walk out with a technical plan that addresses it without needing three follow-up calls to clarify requirements
- You manage your own workload across multiple projects and stakeholders, setting priorities and adjusting as needed without waiting for someone to tell you what comes next
- You write code that other people can actually use, not just proof-of-concept scripts, and you document it well enough that someone else can pick it up six months later
- You can explain a complex orbital mechanics tradeoff to a program manager in two sentences without losing the technical nuance, and you can turn around and debug integration code with a developer the same afternoon
- You operate with a high level of professionalism and accountability in secure, mission-critical environments where details matter and deadlines are real
- You are comfortable being the technical face of Synopsys with a customer, representing the company, the product, and the solution with confidence and clarity
The Team You'll Be Part Of
You will be part of the Ansys Government Initiatives (AGI) team, a dynamic group of engineers, software developers, and business professionals focused on supporting Aerospace and Defense customers with Digital Mission Engineering solutions. The team works closely with Account Managers and product development to drive growth, solve customer problems, and deliver mission-critical software solutions. You will be embedded onsite with a key customer, operating with autonomy while staying connected to the broader AGI team and Synopsys resources.
