Position Description Summary

Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania invites applications for temporary faculty positions (full-time one semester, part-time one semester or part-time academic year ) as needs arise in the Counseling Center with the Department of Student Success.

The Counselor will serve as part of a multidisciplinary team in providing short term, outpatient mental health treatment to enrolled students in addition to consultation, prevention services, and outreach programming on campus. The Counselor will also participate in service and scholarship. The Counselor may also be involved in training and supervision of Practicum Students and Interns in an accredited master’s level program. Potential exists to serve in a coordinator role based on interests, areas of expertise, and needs of Counseling Services (i.e., Clinical Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Athletics Liaison). Occasional evening hours may be required.

The location for these temporary positions is Lock Haven with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.



Duties

  • Providing culturally sensitive, short-term individual clinical services to students with diverse identities and a broad spectrum of emotional, psychological, developmental, social, and academic concerns.
  • Providing both in-person and telehealth counseling services.
  • Providing daytime crisis intervention, emergency, and on-call services.
  • Providing counseling services to enrolled students:
    • conducting intake, triage, and crisis appointments;
    • completing diagnoses, treatment plans, progress notes, and other documentation;
    • conducting short-term individual psychotherapy and group treatment;
    • conducting small-group and campus-wide psychoeducational outreach and consultation;
    • serving as a liaison to various university areas and constituencies as assigned;
    • maintaining appropriate counseling caseload;
    • maintaining clinical records and ensuring confidentiality of private health information in keeping with professional ethics and best practices.

Coordinating care between Counseling Services and other campus departments and community resources, meeting clinical needs of students appropriately and ensuring continuity of care. Consulting with the Director of Counseling Services, Counseling Services team, and other university staff, faculty, and administration as needed. Attending weekly clinical / operational meetings and participating in clinical supervision as needed. Providing clinical training and supervision to Master’s level interns. Serving as a solid team member, contributing and promoting the Center’s mission and its collaborative work culture. Serving and supporting both the university and surrounding communities through participation in appropriate committees and organizations. Remaining up to date on latest developments in the field of mental health and advocating with university stakeholders for the best quality of care for students. Assisting in the evaluation of counseling center services and programming, where appropriate. Participating in regular scholarly growth activities.

On each of the three primary campuses comprising Commonwealth University of PA, Counseling Services is the sole mental health unit on campus with the responsibility of providing a range of mental health services to students and related support to the campus community. Counseling Services strives to assist students in developing insight, personal growth, and resilience, through the exploration of barriers to personal and/or academic progress, development of psychological skills, and provision of psychoeducation, so that students can better achieve their personal, academic, and career goals. Counseling Services provides support to students experiencing normal developmental issues associated with the transition from adolescence to early adulthood, provides support for emerging, acute, and chronic clinical concerns, and responds to individual student and campus-wide immediate crises. Through our training program, we are actively committed to supporting the growth of excellent future clinicians interested in working with college student populations. Qualifying Experience and Education (Minimum/Preferred)

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Counselor Education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience, preferably at a university counseling, wellness, or health center.
  • Licensed or license eligible as in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (if not yet licensed, licensure must be achieved within a year of the date of employment). License-eligible applicants with less experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience working with college age populations (undergraduate through graduate/professional level)
  • Excellent clinical skills (i.e., clinical interviewing/assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, provision of on-call services, documentation, generalist skills)
  • Confidence in working within a short-term therapeutic model.
  • Experience and skills in group therapy
  • Demonstrated maintenance of confidentiality and ethical practice.
  • Strong commitment to a multicultural approach to practice and successful experience working with full range of human diversity and marginalized intersecting identities
  • Demonstrated experience and skills facilitating culturally sensitive and inclusive outreach/psycho-educational programing
  • Commitment to working as an active member of a diverse and robust interdisciplinary campus community.
  • Demonstrated cultivation of collaborative professional partnerships, particularly Student Affairs / Student Success / Residence Life involvement.
  • Solid oral/written/interpersonal skills.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited academic program and internship in health service psychology.
  • Counseling center experience or an area of expertise relative to collegiate mental health such as:
    • expertise in working with young adults who identify as sexual/gender minorities and/or with students with intersectional identities
    • expertise in working with young adults who are Black, Indigenous, Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islanders, or Persons of Color
    • experience in psychotherapy group leadership
    • expertise in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, eating issues, and body image issues
    • expertise working with athletes, veterans, first generation students, and/or non-traditional students interest/experience in Suicide Prevention Campus programming

Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors.
