Maintenance/Service Attendant
Summary
The Maintenance/Service Attendant, under the direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager. is responsible for the maintenance work in performing assigned duties while maintaining the college’s facilities, buildings, grounds and equipment. The Maintenance/Service Attendant is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance tasks at all sites that are carried out with a great deal of independence, attention and organization.
Responsibilities include buildings/grounds, infrastructure, vehicles and equipment. Work also involves having a working knowledge and experience in the methods, materials, tools, hazards, and safety practices of the following trades: general groundskeeping, custodial, and assisting the dayshift maintenance crew in many different trades.
Work is assigned in the form of oral or written instructions and is reviewed upon completion for adherence to standards, completeness and quality by a technical, professional or administrative supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Practices safety in all aspects of job and on a daily basis.
- Performing general routine cleaning and sanitizing of a custodial nature.
- Performs routine repairs to buildings and grounds at all sites.
- Perform general maintenance repairs and projects scheduled by the immediate supervisor.
- Performing grounds maintenance such as mowing lawns, trimming bushes and replacing exterior light bulbs.
- Troubleshoot problems and issues reported by staff, faculty, and administration at the College.
- Maintaining vehicles, tools and equipment required to perform the role effectively.
- Assist the carpenter, plumber, HVAC and electrician on routine maintenance issues.
- Carpentry – perform a variety of general work such as repair to cabinets, shelves, hanging bulletin boards, and painting; experience with general tools and other work associated with the trade.
- HVAC – perform a variety of general work in routine maintenance and minor repairs to HVAC systems such as filter changes, troubleshooting and minor repair or replacement.
- Plumbing – perform a variety of general work in installing/repairing faucets, fountains, and fixtures.
- Landscaping – perform a variety of work in push mowing, trimming shrubs, grading and landscaping around buildings and other work associated with the trade.
- Snow removal to include shoveling, snowblower, and other snow removal equipment.
- Following a maintenance schedule to ensure that all routine tasks are completed.
- Responsible for all multiple site setups.
- Maintains inventory of supplies in assigned area.
- Be available to work Saturdays and overtime when needed.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
Education:
- High school degree or equivalent.
Certifications:
- Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)
- Valid PA Driver’s license.
Work Experience:
- At least three years of experience in general maintenance or construction.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Basic mechanical and trouble shooting skills.
- Basic knowledge to operate custodial equipment.
- Basic knowledge and ability to operate equipment used for grounds work.
- Ability to work and think independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Flexible work schedule to include overtime as needed, subject to change for summer cleaning and snow removal.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with students, the public, and coworkers.
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills. Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: teamwork/cooperation, initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge
Preferred:
- Five years of experience in general maintenance or construction.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk to hear. Must have the physical strength to lift a minimum of 35-50 pounds. Physical strength and ability to bend, stoop, stretch, push, pull, climb and shovel. Ability to tolerate exposure to and work in freezing, subfreezing, and hot/humid temperatures. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
